Boy Scout Troop 105 Trail Maintenance in Rose’s Woods

Boy Scout Troop 105 from Hanover, Pennsylvania was hard at work Saturday morning in Gettysburg National Military Park. On the left is R.J. Gunnarsson, a student at Emory H. Markle Intermediate School in South Western School District. On the right is Drake DeWald, who attends West Manheim Elementary School in South Western. R.J. and Drake were painting the railings of a footbridge in Rose’s Woods. The foundation of this bridge (bottom left) was used to support the Gettysburg Electric Trolley.This view was taken facing southeast at approximately 11:30 AM on Saturday, April 15, 2017.

The boy scout troop was rehabilitating a trail within Rose’s Woods that follows the old trolley bed. Here they are unloading earth along DeTrobriand Avenue. The Rose Farm is in the left background. The portion of the trail getting new dirt and crushed stone is between two footbridges along the trolley bed. The yellow line marks the approximate position of the trail.This map was created in a chair facing east on April 15, 2017.

When we asked the scouts who was the lead on today’s project, we were pointed to this young man: Brady Rivera is a senior at New Oxford High School. The rehabilitation of this trail in Rose’s Woods is Brady’s Eagle Scout project.This view was taken facing northwest at approximately 11:30 AM on Saturday, April 15, 2017.

And the trail really needed it. See the swampy ground in the top of this photograph? Most of this trail between the two footbridges was wet and difficult to navigate after rainfall.This view was taken facing west at approximately 11:30 AM on Saturday, April 15, 2017.

We’re now looking back toward DeTrobriand Avenue. A second layer of dirt/rock was added and smoothed out over the first layer the troop added on Friday. NPS employee George Martin (second from left) was happy to supervise the scouts while they worked. He also underlined to us that this trail was not in the best of shape and that it was great to have groups like the Boy Scouts volunteering to help maintain the battlefield.This view was taken facing northwest at approximately 11:30 AM on Saturday, April 15, 2017.
