Houck’s Ridge Panorama: January 2010

Today we are introducing a new panorama. The photographer is standing on Houck’s Ridge by the monument to the 99th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, facing Little Round Top and Plum Run Valley. This view was taken at approximately 4:30 PM on Wednesday, January 14, 2010. For a medium-sized version of the panorama click here. For the larger JPEG version, click here. If you’d like to see the uncompressed TIFF file, you can download it here (33.7 MB).

We have frequently taken photographs from Little Round Top looking west, but have yet to have a decent panorama of Little Round Top from the east. We have finally found what we think is a good spot. The photographer is standing behind (east of) the monument to the 99th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, located on Houck’s Ridge, above (north of) Devil’s Den. We feel this will give our visitors not only a good view of Little Round Top, but Plum Run Valley and the “Slaughter Pen Area.”

The photograph starts on the left (north) showing Houck’s Ridge, and pans to the right (southwest) showing the witness tree remaining on top of Devil’s Den.
