Old NPS Visitor Center Site Update: Construction Fences Removed

The construction fences around the site of the old Electric Map Visitor Center have now been removed. This view was taken facing west at approximately 5:00 PM on Wednesday, July 15, 2009.

The construction fences around the site of Gettysburg’s “old” National Park Service Electric Map Visitor Center have now been removed. The grass is very overgrown at the site.

The grass has supposedly been allowed to grow at a significant height in order to keep the topsoil in place. This view was taken facing southwest at approximately 5:00 PM on Wednesday, July 15, 2009.

The tree which used to stand outside the restrooms still appears to be very healthy. This view was taken facing southwest at approximately 5:00 PM on Wednesday, July 15, 2009.

The parking lot is still off limits to vehicles, but it has not been removed. Construction equipment for the destruction of the Cyclorama Building will be staged here, if the Cyclorama building is ever torn down/removed. This photograph was taken facing south at approximately 5:00 PM on Wednesday, July 15, 2009.

We’re now standing in the area of the old bus parking area where more than a few buses were parked during the spring season. This photograph was taken facing southeast at approximately 5:00 PM on Wednesday, July 15, 2009.

The grass in the foreground has also been allowed to grow again this year at an unsightly height. This photograph was taken facing east at approximately 5:00 PM on Wednesday, July 15, 2009.

Since the fence has been removed, there’s now an unobstructed view of the Taneytown Road entrance to the National Cemetery. Unobstructed, that is, except for the tall grass. This photograph was taken facing east at approximately 5:00 PM on Wednesday, July 15, 2009.

Some individuals expressed the hope that when the construction fences came down, they would like to have a picnic on the site of the old visitor center. Good luck with that. This photograph was taken facing east at approximately 5:00 PM on Wednesday, July 15, 2009.

This photograph was taken facing northeast at approximately 5:00 PM on Wednesday, July 15, 2009.

This photograph was taken facing northeast at approximately 5:00 PM on Wednesday, July 15, 2009.

The view from the Cyclorama parking lot. This photograph was taken facing north at approximately 5:00 PM on Wednesday, July 15, 2009.

And now we’re back at the top of the hill near the Taneytown Road. This photograph was taken facing northwest at approximately 5:00 PM on Wednesday, July 15, 2009.
