Another Slowly Dying Gettysburg Witness Tree

This Gettysburg Witness Tree along West Confederate Avenue on Seminary Ridge/Warfield Ridge is slowly dying. This view was taken from the east facing west at approximately 5:15 PM on Wednesday, August 27, 2008.

Another Gettysburg Witness Tree is slowly dying. This witness tree is six feet west of West Confederate Avenue. It is north of the Arkansas Monument and west of the Philip Snyder House. There are more than a few other trees in this area that we believe to be witness trees, but we haven’t yet found a War Department Tag or nail/spike on them. Please see our previous posts on Gettysburg Witness Trees on April 30, 2008, May 27, 2008, August 10, 2008, August 12, 2008, and August 16, 2008.

See a later post on Gettysburg Witness Trees on September 8, 2008.

The tree, with a “W” on its trunk (for “Witness,” get it…?) is located approximately 25 yards north of the Arkansas Monument. This view was taken from the southeast facing northwest at approximately 5:15 PM on Wednesday, August 27, 2008.

It is approximately six feet west of West Confederate Avenue. This view was taken from the south facing north at approximately 5:15 PM on Wednesday, August 27, 2008.

The tree on the right is the Witness Tree. The tree on the left appears to be equally as old, but we haven’t yet located a War Department tag or nail/spike in the tree on the left. The Philip Snyder House is in the background. This view was taken from the west facing east at approximately 5:15 PM on Wednesday, August 27, 2008.

There is a War Department tag in the tree that is the subject of today’s post. The tag has a circle around it. This view was taken from the east facing west at approximately 5:15 PM on Wednesday, August 27, 2008.

The War Department tag number is D45. This view was taken from the east facing west at approximately 5:15 PM on Wednesday, August 27, 2008.

The lower branches of the tree are dying. This view was taken from the east facing west at approximately 5:15 PM on Wednesday, August 27, 2008.

This view from the Philip Snyder yard shows the Arkansas Monument on the left. The top of the tree still has its leaves. This view was taken from the northeast facing southwest at approximately 5:15 PM on Wednesday, August 27, 2008.
