This house is most famous for hosting the body of United States Major-General John F. Reynolds on July 1, 1863. It was a convenient location at the intersection of the Emmitsburg Road (Steinwehr Avenue) and the Taneytown Road. Reynolds’ body would travel south along the Taneytown Road and eventually he would be buried in his hometown of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
