2nd Co. Massachusetts Sharpshooters Monument Cleaned

The 2nd Company “Andrew’s” Massachusetts Sharpshooters monument, situated along “The Loop” on the Stony Hill on the southern end of the Gettysburg battlefield. In the right of frame is the monument to the 110th Pennsylvania. This view was taken facing south at approximately 3:30 PM on Sunday, March 4, 2012.

The monument was vandalized, likely last Wednesday night, with the blue spray paint seen here. This view was taken facing east at approximately 6:50 AM on Thursday, March 1, 2012.

The paint was removed last week by the National Park Service Monument Preservation branch. This view was taken facing east at approximately 3:30 PM on Sunday, March 4, 2012.

We’re extremely pleased with how quickly the paint was removed, and that the Park took a page out of their Preservation Brief #38, which states that “Removing graffiti as soon as it appears is the key to its elimination–and recurrence.” This view was taken facing east at approximately 3:30 PM on Sunday, March 4, 2012.
