Back in March when we first updated you on the reconstruction of West Middle Street or Route 116 in the town of Gettysburg, we heard estimates of six months to a year for the project to be completed. The joint effort being undertaken by the Borough of Gettysburg and PennDOT has hit problems in the last week that will continue to delay completion.

Let’s go take a closer look at what the road looks like from the west side of town. This view was taken facing northeast at approximately 4:15 PM on Thursday, July 21, 2011.

The marker to the far right in the previous photograph is to Company D of the 149th Pennsylvania. This view was taken facing northeast at approximately 4:15 PM on Thursday, July 21, 2011.

This is how the road has looked for the last few days. Paving was going to start but a faulty storm sewer with the potential to cause leaks and sinkholes if left unaddressed was discovered. This view was taken facing east at approximately 4:15 PM on Thursday, July 21, 2011.

We’ve now moved to the opposite end of the construction project at the intersection of Baltimore and West Middle Street in Gettysburg. This view was facing west at approximately 10:00 AM on Friday, July 22, 2011.

Because the project is a joint effort between the Borough and PennDOT (who shares ownership of the state roadway, Route 116, of which West Middle Street is a part), there has been debate between the two parties about who is financially responsible for the replacement. This view was taken facing west at approximately 10:00 AM on Friday, July 22, 2011

Meanwhile, as the two groups attempt to extend deadlines and find money, the roadway remains closed. This view was taken facing east at approximately 4:15 PM on Thursday, July 21, 2011.
