Little Round Top Waysides and March and April, 2009 Little Round Top Panoramas

New waysides have made their appearance on Little Round Top. Here is the exhibit at the top of the hill overlooking Plum Run Valley (Valley of Death). This view was taken facing west at approximately 8:00 AM on Friday, April 24, 2009.

The National Park Service spent time and money refurbishing waysides around the battlefield the last couple of years, including the newly installed waysides on Little Round Top. Unfortunately there are now new waysides with the same old photos that graced the previous waysides. The landscape certainly looks different than eight years ago. Thousands of trees have now been cut down, and thousands of trees and bushes have been replanted. Some visitors might be somewhat confused at first when they attempt to match up the pictures with the actual terrain and vegetation. We are also showing our panoramas for March and April. The color is returning to Plum Run Valley.

While the wayside is new, the color photograph is old. There have many many trees cut down since this photograph was taken approximately eight years ago. The landscape does not match the picture. This view was taken facing southwest at approximately 8:00 AM on Friday, April 24, 2009.

Notice all the trees around Devil’s Den, for instance. This view was taken facing southwest at approximately 8:00 AM on Friday, April 24, 2009.

Here’s the new wayside which overlooks the Union defensive line, or “fishhook” line. This view was taken facing north at approximately 8:00 AM on Friday, April 24, 2009.

Again, the picture doesn’t match up well with the actual landscape. There are currently very few trees between the Trostle Farm and the Codori Farm as shown in the color photograph. This view was taken facing northwest at approximately 8:00 AM on Friday, April 24, 2009.

It would seem that a National Park Service site that is very proud of its battlefield restoration would have wanted someone to snap a couple of new pictures to show that restoration, and then add those pictures to the new waysides. This view was taken facing north at approximately 8:00 AM on Friday, April 24, 2009.

Our latest panoramic update of the change of seasons from Little Round Top. This view was taken at approximately 7:22 AM on Friday, April 24, 2009.

The purpose of our weekly panorama from Little Round Top is to give those unable to be here an idea of the change of seasons from one of the most popular locations on the Gettysburg Battlefield. We have frequently taken photographs (in the form of a panorama) of this part of the battlefield from in front of the 91st Pennsylvania monument. Now that April has arrived, color is again returning to the Valley of Death. The left side of the photograph is pointing to the south and southwest. The center is pointing to the west, and the right is pointing to the northwest and north.
