Gettysburg at Arlington Part 26: Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guide Rich Kohr

Arlington National Cemetery, overlooking Washington, D.C., has many connections to Gettysburg and to the Gettysburg Campaign. There are many more connections than to only Robert E. Lee’s residence, and John F. Kennedy’s grave. Almost every row in the older sections have someone buried there who had a link to Gettysburg.

In today’s Arlington post, Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guide Rich Kohr shows the graves of three legs, Colonel Albert Morrow and Colonel (later Brigadier General) Ira Abbott, and of Captain (later Brigadier General) John J. Coppinger.

In Video #71 (Videos #1 – #70 were shown in our previous Arlington posts) Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guide Rich Kohr is standing in Mary Lee’s Rose Garden. He shows a marker for three legs amputated at Washington, D.C.’s Judiciary Square Hospital in May, 1864. This view was taken facing north to west to north at approximately 3:30 PM on Sunday, December 5, 2010.

The remains of three amputated legs are located beneath stone #5232. Private James G. Carey of the 106th Pennsylvania Infantry survived his operation and died in 1913. Arthur McQuinn was a private in the 14th United States Infantry. Sergeant Michael Creighton, a native of Ireland in the 9th Massachusetts Infantry died two weeks after his operation, and is buried in Section 27. He is the only person known to have two graves at Arlington. This view was taken facing north at approximately 3:30 PM on Sunday, December 5, 2010.

In Video #72 Licensed Battlefield Guide Rich Kohr shows us the graves of Colonel Albert Morrow (a Lieutenant in the 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry at Gettysburg) and Colonel Ira Abbott who commanded the 1st Michigan Infantry Regiment at Gettysburg. This view was taken facing north to northwest to north to northwest at approximately 3:30 PM on Sunday, December 5, 2010.

Albert Morrow also served on the staff of Brigadier General John Buford, who is seated in this photograph. Standing from left to right are: Myles Keough, Peter Penn-Gaskell, Craig Wadsworth, and Albert Morrow. This view was taken circa August, 1863.

Licensed Battlefield Guide Rich Kohr is standing by the grave of Colonel Ira Abbott who was wounded on July 2, 1863 while commanding the 1st Michigan Infantry Regiment in the Wheatfield/Stony Hill area. The old Arlington Amphitheater is in the background. This view was taken facing northwest at approximately 3:30 PM on Sunday, December 5, 2010.

Before he was wounded at Gettysburg, Colonel Ira Coray Abbott was wounded in the face in December, 1862 at the Battle of Fredericksburg. This view was taken circa the 1860s.

Colonel Abbott was brevetted Brigadier General on March 13, 1865 for “gallant and meritorious services during the war.” This view was taken facing southwest at approximately 3:30 PM on Sunday, December 5, 2010.

Rich Kohr is standing near the monument marking the location of the grave of Brigadier General John J. Coppinger, who was a Captain in the 14th United States Infantry Regiment at Gettysburg. This view was taken facing north at approximately 3:30 PM on Sunday, December 5, 2010.
