William Patterson House: Logs Completely Hidden Beneath Siding

The board and batten siding has been added to the south side of the William Patterson House. The siding now covers the log structure on all four sides. This view was taken facing north at approximately 4:30 PM on Monday, April 26, 2010.

Gettysburg National Military Park’s William Patterson House, located east of the Taneytown Road, between the junction with Granite Schoolhouse Lane and Hunt Avenue has now completely lost its “log cabin look.” Board and batten siding has now been added to the east, north, and west sides of the structure. Board siding has been added to the south side of the structure. More progress has been made on the concrete foundation for the kitchen.

The Taneytown Road is in the foreground. This view was taken facing northeast at approximately 4:30 PM on Monday, April 26, 2010.

Landscaping is also occurring around the structure as seen by the area where grass has been planted on the west side of the structure, and is now covered with straw. This view was taken facing east at approximately 4:30 PM on Monday, April 26, 2010.

This view was taken facing southeast at approximately 4:30 PM on Monday, April 26, 2010.

More landscaping on the north side of the Patterson House. This view was taken facing south at approximately 4:30 PM on Monday, April 26, 2010.

The kitchen foundation has now been filled with gravel. This view was taken facing southwest at approximately 4:30 PM on Monday, April 26, 2010.

A closer view of the gravel filling the foundation. Ooh. Aah. This view was taken facing southwest at approximately 4:30 PM on Monday, April 26, 2010.

The large stones that had previously been in the foreground have now all been used in the foundation, or have been carted off to another location(s). Again the ground around the structure is being smoothed/landscaped. This view was taken facing west at approximately 4:30 PM on Monday, April 26, 2010.

This view was taken facing northwest at approximately 4:30 PM on Monday, April 26, 2010.

While boards have been placed on the south side of the structure, the batten isn’t completely in place. This view was taken facing north at approximately 4:30 PM on Monday, April 26, 2010.

Because the boards do not completely come together or “flush” with each other, there are spaces between the boards. This view gives us a good idea of how the batten is used to cover that space/gap between the boards. Only five strips of batten are in place on the right of this south side of the structure. This view was taken facing north at approximately 4:30 PM on Monday, April 26, 2010.
