A Closer Look at Gettysburg’s Newest Lincoln Statue

The detail on the newest Lincoln statue includes the lines on his face. By the time he had arrived in Gettysburg to dedicate the cemetery, the country had been at war for over two years. If you make this image larger, you will also see that he has cracked lips. This view was taken facing northwest at approximately 7:00 AM on Saturday, November 21, 2009.

Gettysburg’s latest Lincoln statue was dedicated at the Gettysburg National Military Park Visitor Center on Thursday, November 19, 2009, the 146th anniversary of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Today we take a closer look at the statue, and we admit that we are impressed with the detail.

The Lincoln statue was put here at ground level so that people could have access to it like these two Boy Scout leaders from New York. They have decorated him with sunglasses and a hat. Is this really the way that we want to teach our young people to interact with monuments at Gettysburg National Military Park even before they enter the Visitor Center? This view was taken facing northwest at approximately 7:00 AM on Saturday, November 21, 2009.

One of the Ranger-Historians told us that on Friday, there was a high school group of over 20 students hanging all over the monument. He was wondering if Lincoln’s head will still remain on this statue by Lincoln’s 201st Birthday on February 12th. So is this a rising or a setting sun in how monuments are treated at Gettysburg National Military Park? It’s a rising sun because these pictures were taken in the morning. This view was taken facing southeast at approximately 7:00 AM on Sunday, November 22, 2009.
