The National Park Service’s attempt to restore the Gettysburg Battlefield closer to what it looked like in 1863 continues with tree cutting near the monument to the 19th Indiana Infantry Regiment near McPherson’s Woods.

The monument to the 19th Indiana is located east of Meredith Avenue. The tree cutting is on the high ground behind the monument, which is the slope of McPherson’s Ridge. This view was taken facing southeast at approximately 2:45 PM on Saturday, February 12, 2011.

While most of the tree cutting is occuring on the high ground during the winter months, it appears that there has been some tree thinning in the low ground behind the monument. This view was taken facing southwest at approximately 2:45 PM on Saturday, February 12, 2011.

At least that’s what this picture taken over two years ago seems to show. Yes, we know there is more undergrowth during warmer months. This view was taken facing southwest at approximately 5:00 PM on Wednesday, October 8, 2008.

The tree cutting is occurring on the high ground this winter because the higher, drier ground is supposed to be able to handle the heavy equipment better than the low, wetter ground. This view was taken facing south at approximately 2:45 PM on Saturday, February 12, 2011.
